Religions Spread Through Conquest Essays (2421 words) - Culture
Religions Spread Through Conquest Religions Spread Through Conquest- When examining history, both in an expert and scholastic sense, we attempt to make associations among civic establishments and time periods. Students of history have endeavored to find all inclusive constants of human instinct, a bond that structures from landmass to mainland, human being to person. Is there a steady quality that all people groups forces, and is reflected in all civic establishments? Surely, it is very hard to make speculations about hundreds of years of present day history. To state that something is valid for all of history is for all intents and purposes incomprehensible, as a counter-model exists for pretty much anything that can be said of any gathering of human advancements. To state that all religions are spread by savagery is similarly out of line and false - on the grounds that differentiated religions has been spread in exceedingly various districts of the world, by incomprehensibly various societies. Islam, as a prime model, has been portrayed unjustly by history specialists and the media as a religion of savagery. To put it gruffly, as this article does, Islam was basically spread through Arab regional victories (Sudo, 4). In any case, upon assessment, it isn't reasonable for make the speculation that Islam is a religion of viciousness, and one notification when taking a gander at world religion on an entire, one finds that Islam was not any more fierce than some other religion. Indeed, not exclusively is Islam not a on a very basic level fierce way of thinking, however we can likewise observe that numerous other religions typically considered peaceful, for example, Christianity or Hinduism, have been spread through grisly victory. In this manner, in scanning for an all inclusive consistent of history, we should not fall into the paradox of deliberations, as Sydney J. Harris acutely puts it, and accept that due to disengaged episodes and clashes of regional aspirations, that all religions have brutal inclinations. Islam has, consistently, been to some degree survivor of situation - surely it has been seen by numerous individuals as severe and pitiless. This conviction began over a thousand years back, when Islamic people groups previously compromised the western world. As they gradually subverted Byzantine position, Christians got unnerved of their quality, bringing about across the board hostility and abhorrence. Hindus and Buddhists of the South Asian subcontinent lived under Islamic law for hundreds of years (Ahmad, et. al., 186), and in the long run, in the twentieth century, split the locale into irate groups (Ahmad, et. al., 207). Mohammed, the prophet of Islam, was an extraordinary warrior. This perpetually lead crushed people groups to accept that he sired a faction of war and viciousness. Throughout the hundreds of years, it additionally has built up the capacity to impart a feeling of sacred reason onto its devotees and warriors, where they go into a skirmish of unavoidable passing for their confidence in the jihad, or on the other hand blessed war. Indeed, even today, the jihad is as yet a strong wellspring of strife and revultion, as the a large number of the issues in the Middle East revolve around the issue of Islamic Fundamentalism and the jihads. Initially, Islam was seen by western history specialists as a religion of brutality and triumph; by going after the troops of the Quraish, [Mohammed] debilitated them to the point of accommodation (Mohammed and Islam, 1). Actually, Mohammed was a warrior, blue-blood, and splendid planner - a glaring difference to numerous other heavenly men of history. He had to both guard his urban communities and power accommodation, as the entry had appeared, as a result of the solid military forces of his strict forerunners and oppressors, the agnostics of the Center East. Islam implies accommodation as indicated by the Islam conversation in class - and one may expect that the accommodation was achieved through military and powerful methods. Actually, while Mohammed lectured harmony from 610 to 622 AD, he pulled in not many believers and was oppressed by the current decision paganistic system. After the dreams of 622 AD, he understood that his motivation was significantly more earnest than previously, and just by then did he start to use his military abilities (Class Discussion). In any case, in spite of the more savage nature that his journey took, much after the disclosures by Gabriel in 622 AD, by presenting his disclosures so anyone might hear, Mohammed made numerous believers, (Mohammed and Islam,1). Mohammed was not a simply vicious man, yet likewise an extraordinary speaker and rabble rouser (Mueller,

Understudies and workforce the same must obey rules of legitimate grant, which implies that all scholarly work should result from a people own endeavors. Scholarly commitments from others must be reliably and dependably recognized. Scholastic work finished in some other manner is fraudulentâ⬠( ). Manufacture is simply causing things to up. As per Penn college scholarly honesty, creation is fabricating sources, data, statements, or whatever else has no spot in articles or papers dependent on investigation, detailing, or an examination. Presenting own work which has been reviewed and submitting again for another courses called reusing. In any case, a few teachers may permit utilizing as long as understudies did themselves, understudies must not expect that itââ¬â¢s worthy procedure. On the off chance that understudy need to reuse an equivalent task talk about with educator. On the off chance that teacher offer consent to utilize it than overhaul task and check sources and reference, or not utilizing it by any stretch of the imagination. Unapproved joint effort is working with accomplice without authorization of educator and submitted for an evaluation. In software engineering class, understudies are permitted to examine ventures ideas, however code must be their own. On the off chance that understudies cooperate and submitted same code independently than it will consider as written falsification. They need to make their own code if an idea is same thatââ¬â¢s fine. Case of cheating, Mia was an understudy at University of Minnesota. In 2013, she moved Twin urban communities from another area. It is difficult for her to fit in Twin urban areas due to comprehend the language, and make new companions. Here and there it is hard to do assignments and focus on the entirety of her classes. Fall 2013, she is taking a science class. She figured it would be possible class yet it turn out truly extreme. Mia concentrated as hard as possible for the class work and testicles. In one of the tests, the appropriate responses are to be set apart in scantram by passing out lettered circles on a scantram. The test secured the points that she didnââ¬â¢t study. She attempted her best to complete the test and afterward delivers. she return to her work area and anticipate the finish of class. Different understudies are as yet taking a shot at the test. Imprint was one of them, he appears to have no issue with the test and he is taking as much time as necessary to do complete the test. Mia is as yet trusting that the class will end yet between than she saw mark scantram and there are numerous answers not quite the same as her. So she trust on mark answers and approach educator for her scantram back, saying that she didn't effectively put her understudy ID number. Teacher hand it back scantram, she rapidly eradicates and changes a few answers that she saw on Markââ¬â¢s scantram and turn it back in. At some point later, the educator illuminates her that the delegate saw her change her answers alongside understudy ID number. She will be given a ââ¬Å"Fâ⬠for the test and for the course ( ). Mia experiences difficulty with English isnââ¬â¢t pardon for duplicating answers from another understudy. In the event that she experiencing issues to find class than she should chat with educator, or approach another understudies, or find support from Teacher Assistant. This is away from of cheating on the grounds that Mia duplicated answers from Mark. Mia could request additional opportunity to read for the test, or asked about what sort of inquiries would have been on the test so she could concentrate on contemplates. In the event that we looking from Mia perspective than she is from another nation that she most likely donââ¬â¢t know the principles or help are accessible for her. Stress isn't considered supporting condition, however disappointment may be. Case of written falsification, John is undergrad subject organizer on introduction to programming. The undertakings expect understudies to submit code with configuration, actualize, and test and troubleshoot programs utilizing C++ language (programming language). John realizes that understudies can get code from web, companions or purchase from sites instead of make own code. So he makes a task to diminish the chances to duplicate from web and not accomplishing their work. It is imperative to that activities will assist with building the essential information on programming. Amy was one of Johnââ¬â¢s associates; she inquires as to whether she can test her mutual code on johnââ¬â¢s understudy assignments john concurs. John figures his understudies did their assignments their own, however Amyââ¬â¢s program discover 15% of the understudies replicated code from schoolmates. At some point, programming assignments have certain regular approaches to take care of the issue. So that didnââ¬â¢t imply that they duplicated from one another or get from web on the grounds that toward the starting level class they donââ¬â¢t have enough information about the manners in which that they can move toward a similar arrangement. Yet, it didnââ¬â¢t imply that understudies didnââ¬â¢t replicated structure web or different understudies. Itââ¬â¢s all depend how precise Amy program is, if program simply looking same character that found in the understudies task than their strength chance that understudies duplicated, however in the event that programming testing on the calculations than itââ¬â¢s all rely upon the necessities of the task. In such a case that educator dole out that understudy need to incorporates method than sure it will be enormous number will show. There are some circumstance itââ¬â¢s difficult to conclude that understudies done Academic Integrity infringement. For instance, Kali and Lucy are worldwide understudies structure Narnia and in a similar science class. Lucy comprehends English superior to Kali. Lucy endeavors to improve Kaliââ¬â¢s English jargon. Kali attempts her best to improve her English, however she is making some hard memories obliging the data since she isnââ¬â¢t resting soundly or eating. During test, Kali is experiencing difficulty understanding what inquiries are posing for along these lines she doesnââ¬â¢t recognize what to compose for the appropriate response. She terrified that sheââ¬â¢ll bomb the class. Kali begins asking Lucy what to do. The TA sees that Kali and Lucy are talking in Narnian and he asks them what they are discussing. So Lucy clarify than Kali doesnââ¬â¢t comprehends what inquiry posing for so she simply interpreting the inquiries for Kali. The TA asks them not to talk and on the off chance that Kali has question, at that point she ought to carry it to him. Kali need to him and TA disclose to her yet she still didnââ¬â¢t comprehend what the inquiries posing for. So she returned to her seat and begins to freeze. Few moments later, the two of them begin talking in Narnian. TA instructs them to quit talking, yet TA realizes Lucy is a shrewd understudy however believes that Lucy may very well interpret the inquiry yet he isnââ¬â¢t sure. So he chooses to answer to the teacher. Lucy took a chance with her evaluation by not doing as the TA said. Both could get bombing grades on the test. It would have been exceptional if Lucy had conversed with the teacher about Kaliââ¬â¢s issues about getting English. The teacher may propose to take ESL classes to improve Kaliââ¬â¢s English and make new companions or may ready to suit Kaliââ¬â¢s needs better in the event that he had know there was an issue. The teacher may give one change to both to re-take test, if conceivable with a Narnian interpreter for Kali to test her insight. Since it is an extremely predicament that there is change that Lucy may very well make an interpretation of inquiries to Kali and not furnished any responses. So that would be out of line for her to characterize as scholarly untrustworthiness. Dorms
Dorms I know enough to stay away from trying to describe the different dorms because unless youve lived there, you cant describe it. Sure, I could tell you my impression, but odds are most people would disagree. Even if I described my own dorm, a lot of people would probably disagree. This isnt to say I wont tell you if you ask, but Ill avoid typing it on the admissions website. What I will do, however, is let the dorms speak for themselves, and our friends over at CalTech have helped us out a bit in that regard. Allow me to introduce, Beaver Scope! According to the author of Beaver Scope Almost a year ago I stumbled upon an impressively precise description of MITs external IPs. Naturally, I saved and stored the file away figuring it would be useful for something one day. The release of the WikiWatcher suite near pranking season makes for a propitious time for that old data to be put to use. I present Beaver Scope, pinpointing many of Wikipedia-editing Beavers with almost unsettling precision. Thats right, its a website that breaks down Wikipedia page edits by MIT Building number, letting you see which pages are edited by which dorm. Theoretically, this could be used to generalize the types of people who live there. On the other hand, it may reveal nothing and serve as nothing more than a curiosity. Regardless, I thought itd be fun to share. Happy stereotyping! Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt Disappears
He might have been eaten by a shark. Or maybe he was assassinated by secret agents from the Soviet Union. Of course, he could have possibly been picked up by a Chinese submarine. Others have said that he might have committed suicide or been picked up by a UFO. Such were the rumors and conspiracy theories that ran rampant after Harold Holt, Australias 17th Prime Minister, disappeared on December 17, 1967. Who Was Harold Holt? Liberal Party leader Harold Edward Holt was only 59 years old when he went missing and yet he had already served a lifetime in service to Australias government. After having spent 32 years in Parliament, he became Australias prime minister in January 1966 on a platform that supported United States troops in Vietnam. However, his tenure as prime minister was very short; he had been prime minister for only 22 months when he went for a fateful swim on December 17, 1967. A Short Vacation On December 15, 1967, Holt finished up some work in Canberra and then flew to Melbourne. From there he drove to Portsea, a beautiful resort town where he had a vacation home. Portseaà was one of Holts favorite places to relax, to swim, and to spearfish. à Holt spent Saturday, December 16 visiting with friends and family. Sunday, December 17s plan was to be similar. In the morning, he had an early breakfast, played with his granddaughter, and gathered some friends to watch a vessel arrive from England and go for a short swim. The afternoon was to include a barbecue lunch, spearfishing, and an evening event. Holt, however, disappeared around midday. A Short Swim in Rough Seas Around 11:30 a.m. on December 17, 1967, Holt met four friends at a neighbors house and then went with them to the military Quarantine Station, where they were all waived through the security checkpoint. After watching a ship pass through the Heads, Holt and his friends drove over to Cheviot Bay Beach, a beach that Holt often frequented.à Stepping away from the others, Holt changed into a pair of dark swim trunks behind an outcropping of rocks; he left on his sand shoes, which were missing laces. Despite the high tide and rough waters,à Holt went into the ocean for a swim. Perhaps he had become complacent about the dangers of the ocean since he had a long history of swimming at this location or perhaps he didnt realize quite how rough the water really was that day. At first, his friends could see him swimming. As the waves grew more ferocious, his friends soon realized that he was in trouble. They shouted at him to come back, but the waves kept him away from the shore. A few minutes later, they had lost him. He was gone. A monumental search and rescue attempt was launched, but the search was eventually called off without ever having found Holts body. Two days after he went missing, Holt was presumed dead and a funeral service was held for him on December 22. Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other heads of state attended Holts funeral. Conspiracy Theories Although conspiracy theories still abound surrounding Holts death, the mostà likely cause of his death was the bad sea conditions. Quite possibly his body was eaten by sharks (a nearby area is known to be shark territory), but it is just as likelyà that the extreme undertow took his body out to sea. However, since his body was never found, conspiracy theories continue to spread about Holts mysterious disappearance. Holt was the third Australian Prime Minister to die in office but is best remembered for the unusual circumstances surrounding his death.

Actions for Wrongful Birth and Wrongful Conception
Actions for wrongful birth and wrongful conception Actions for wrongful birth and wrongful conception frequently raise moral, ethical and philosophical issues. Legal judgments have often been contradictory and on occasions have arrived at their conclusions without addressing all the pertinent issues. Actions for wrongful conception or wrongful birth are variants of clinical liability and negligence. The initiative to bring an action lies with the parents. This is different for actions for wrongful life where the action is brought by the child who alleges injury in utero or has a preventable congenital condition. There has only been in one such case in English law ââ¬â McKay v Essex Area Health Authority, and the Court of Appeal rejectedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The second is for the costs associated with raising the resultant child. Whilst the costs associated with a childââ¬â¢s upbringing are also foreseeable their award has posed a greater dilemma for the courts. A child resulting from a pregnancy arising from a doct orââ¬â¢s lack of care would appear to have a tortious claim to such damages. The concept of compensating for a healthy child has led to moral and policy concerns. In the Canadian courts some years ago this matter was aired in Doiron v Orr the judge awarded damages for mental anguish related to the pregnancy but there would be no liability for the cost of bringing up an unsought child. A range of views has developed from never awarding damages, always doing so or doing so in a graded fashion by offsetting the benefits of parenthood with the economic costs. In an action for unwanted pregnancy in Udale v Bloomsbury Area Health Authority there was an award for pain and suffering along with loss of earnings following a negligently performed operation. However an award for the economic costs of bringing up a child was rejected. In his judgment Jupp J felt that the joy and love of a child should be set against economic loss. There was a different view in Emeh v Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster Area Health Authority where the Court of Appeal awarded damages which included the cost of rearing a child. The court rejected the policy objections cited in Udale.Show MoreRelatedPrenatal Screening And Prenatal Development1385 Words à |à 6 Pages Throughout all of mankindââ¬â¢s history all living beings have shared a common trait since their conception, prenatal development. The Roman Empire During The Middle Ages - 1307 Words
Europe, for millennia, has paved the way for the world. Socratic thinking stems from Socrates, who tutored Plato; who in turn laid the philosophical foundations for a Republic, who tutored Aristotle; who in turn tutored Alexander the Great, who created one of the largest empires of ancient times. Centuries after the death of Alexander arose the Roman Empire, which was also among the largest of ancient empires. The Roman Empire was eventually bested by Vikins and Germans, leading to a break of European dominance during the Middle Ages. This void was filled by Genghis Khan who created the largest empire during the Middle Ages. It eventually fell and was replaced by a European power well-known to Americans, the British Empire. The most recent centuries have seen a rise of European and Asian empires: Spanish, French, German/Ottoman, Russian, Japanese, Qing. Media Violence1 Essay Example For Students
Media Violence1 Essay Persuasive Essay: The Impact of Media Violence Monkey see, monkey do has become a well-known saying in todays society, but is it correct? Just sixty years ago the invention of the television was viewed as a technological curiosity with black and white ghost-like figures on a screen so small hardly anyone could see them. Today that curiosity has become a constant companion to many, mainly children. From reporting the news and persuading us to buy certain products, to providing programs that depict violence, television has all but replaced written material. Unfortunately, it is these violent programs that are endangering our present-day society. Violent images on television, as well as in the movies, have inspired people to set spouses on fire in their beds, lie down in the middle of highways, extort money by placing bombs in airplanes, rape, steal, murder, and commit numerous other shootings and assaults. Television is a dominant influence in cultivating values in children and shaping their behavior. Unfortunately, much of todays television programming is violent. Many studies on the effects of television violence on children and teenagers have found that children can become immune to the revulsion of violence, accept violence as an acceptable way to solve real-life problems, imitate the violent acts they see, and begin to identify with the characters on television. The National Television Violence Study and thousands of others have proved that media violence can lead to aggressive behavior in children. These studies have found that 61 percent of all television programming contains violence, and that childrens shows are the most violent of all which is very frightening. The study has also found that by the time an average child leaves elementary school, he or she will have witnessed 8,000 murders and over 100,000 other acts of violence on television. The amount of violence during Saturday morning cartoons is higher than the amount of violence during primetime programming. Media violence is especially damaging to children under the age of eight because they cannot distinguish between real life and fantasy. Violent acts on television may seem real to young children, and can thus be distressing to the young viewers. Violence in the media can and does control the thoughts and actions of children. The National Association for the Education of Young Children focuses on three effects of media violence on children: desensitization, increased aggression, and the Mean World Syndrome. Desensitization occurs when children become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others, increased aggression is when children are more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways towards others, and the Mean World Syndrome is when children become more fearful of the world around them. Seeing violence repeatedly on television can make a child believe that violence solves problems. Not only is the child affected by the violent acts, but also by the music, lighting, and other techniques. The music plays a part in the excitement of the scene, and backlighting and close-ups make characters heroes no matter how they solve problems. The hero always looks calm, clean, and collected even though he just engaged in highly physical situations. The burglar always rises unscathed from his accident, and there is little blood when the burglar is shot although in real life there should be. Media violence does not show the consequences of real-life violence, especially in cartoons, toy commercials and music videos. .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 , .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .postImageUrl , .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 , .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8:hover , .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8:visited , .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8:active { border:0!important; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8:active , .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8 .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uea6bf1daa50fa00cd9be17b51fdbecd8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Bubonic Plague Essay Claim Consequently, children develop confusions about real life after viewing violent programs; thus, they come to accept violent behavior as normal and appropriate. Reflection On Marxist Ideology Essays - Economic Ideologies
Reflection On Marxist Ideology Communism ?Capital is not personal, but social power and product.? (Carl Marx) Carl Marx, perhaps one of the most influential philosophers in history, is widely remembered for the revolutionizing ideologies he presented in the Communist Manifesto. Marx was certainly a man of great intelligence and vision. His many visions about capitalistic development are constantly reflected in today's society. Job alienation is certainly rampant. Most individuals have a ?TGIF; Monday sucks? mentality. To most people work rather than happiness is the meaning of life; nothing is ever enough?everyone wants more, More, MORE. The bourgeois are running things, as a large portion of the world's resources and wealth is in the hands of a select few. The immediate question that then comes to mind is whether this is advantageous to society. To correctly answer this deep question, one must look at the pros and cons of the socialist ideology. In theory, socialism has several observable benefits. For one, the equality of humankind presents itself as an important theme. The capitalistic bourgeois/proletariat relationship that exists is destroyed. Consequently, the exploitation of the proletariat by the bourgeois is non-existent. Work now takes on a different meaning?instead of being the result of greed and necessity, work becomes a means of helping and interacting with society. In the truest form of communism, acquiring wealth is an unnecessary evil?instead society provides the individual with an adequate standard of living and vice versa. Ultimately, an ideal communist state is practically a Utopia. Marx clearly predicted that a state of Utopia would form with a transition from communism. (Marx detailed steps to reaching Utopia include: primitive socialism feudalism capitalismsocialism communism Utopia.) While communism has its benefits, the reality of reaching these benefits is literally non-existent. Even Marx predicted that this would be the case!?he said that in the presence of capitalism, communism will lose. This is a very interesting statement, and clearly implies that the socialistic ideology is not perfect. Communism is a Utopia, and therefore it arguably cannot exist. Communism calls for the cooperation of too many individuals. Everyone would have to be a productive member of society. Politicians and government officials would have to govern flawlessly. Any form of corruption could not be tolerated, as it could bring about total anarchy and downfall. In addition to these troublesome ?technicalities,? the idea of public goods does not always result in the desired outcome. For example, imagine the creation of a public lawnmower. As opposed to a private owner who would try to preserve the longevity of the lawnmower, the public would have no real incentive to take care of the l awnmower. Certainly, private ownership provides to the preservation of goods and resources. Also, take into consideration the status of the US public school system as compared to the US private school system. Private schools have done remarkably better at producing better results and using less money when compared to US public schools. To an extent this can also be said for private health care?in comparing England's and Canada's health care systems to that of the US. Lastly, the communist ideology destroys competition. With no competition people do not have an incentive to advance. Inferior products that lack quality and improvement are made. Inferior services that lack needed advancement?such as health care?are provided. This is not to say that this is the case with all services and products. However, without competition there is no real desire to change the norm, regardless of how good or bad it is. This would be especially damaging to advances in medicine, science, and research. 0. Free Essays on Dj Forums
Technical Analysis of Forums RE: DJ Forums Overview The genre I chose to do for my report is an analysis on DJ fan forum sites in comparison to the manufacturers FAQ sites. In this document I will be discussing where information is produced between manufacturer sites of DJ equipment and fan forums on miscellaneous sites. There is a big difference between the two because the manufacturer sites depend more upon paper plans and product analysis rather than being hobbyists of the musical instruments and having more hands on experience. Creators of the technical sites and forums The authors of the fan forum sites are the fans themselves. On these forum sites, different people who use the DJ equipment trade questions and answers about technical problems they have while using the equipment. These sites are not limited to just questions and answers, it is also a platform for discussion about different pieces of music equipment. There is usually not just one single person that responds to all of the questions. At times the fans may get as many as 10 different people telling them ways to fix or improve problems they may be having. These forum sites, however, are not limited to just technical problems, they tend to offer advice on how to keep your equipment running smooth, or even teach you how to make modifications to them to make them perform better. Some of the information that you find on the fan forum sites maybe not be available on the manufacturer sites. All of the fans within the particular DJ forum are responsible for asking and answering each others questions, and it is up to the user asking to questions to decide which response they will use to answer the questions they may have. So in these forums the authors are highly visible in the sense that the forum is like a conversation board, and even though the reader may not personally know the ones who respond to him, they still converse and communicate back and forth. Terrorism - Essay Example I would recommend to the President to halt all such surveillance in the territory of a sovereign state, because to continue to do so will only escalate the already tense situation between the two states. If, on the other hand, this event happened over international waters, then the president should make an extremely strong statement of condemnation to the Iranian government for the provocation. Furthermore, he should warn the Iranians that if a similar action takes place again, then the United States will not only tighten the sanctions that have been placed on Iran, it might also choose to make retaliatory attacks. Perhaps by doing this, the Iranians might discontinue their unprovoked attacks, fearing the American military might. However, the President should choose his words exceedingly carefully before making such a statement, because certain words, when used, tend to make people respond in the opposite way. If he were to make a statement that sounds threatening, for example, the Iranians might instead of reacting in fear, choose to respond in defiance. This would eventually lead to a war between these two states, something that will totally destabilize the Gulf

Research paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 3
Research paper - Essay Example As such, relationship building, intimacy, and the cost benefit theory of a relationship will be analyzed through the lens of how these aspects are presented within the film in question. These three have been selected due to the fact that this analyst believes they are the strongest determinants of the plot and action that takes place within the film in question. Firstly, with regards to relationship building, the text refers to this is a multipart process result in the strengthening of the relationship or can ultimately result in its undoing. As with so many films that are concentric upon relationship and the means by which individuals fall in and out of love, ââ¬Å"Hitchâ⬠follows a somewhat predictable line in that it presents the case of two individuals who initiate, experiment, intensify, integrate and bond throughout the course of the film. Naturally, this process is not painless or carried out in one seamless action. Rather the inverse of these is also represented to the fact that during the latter half of the film, the couple experiences a degree of differentiation, circumscribing, stagnation, avoidance, and termination. Naturally, as is the case with many films, the ability of the filmmakers to encapsulate all of these actions and emotions within a brief one hour and 20 minutes is necessarily limited. However, each of these determinants is presented in a verifiable way so that it can be ascertained that this process is indeed taking place; howbeit in fast-forward. Similarly, although intimacy is oftentimes misunderstood to merely equate to a type of physical intimacy, involving sexual relations, this is not only what was presented within the movie in question. For instance, the scene regarding Ellis Island creates a moment of intense spiritual and psychological intimacy that sees both characters share from their past and bond rapidly over these realities. Although the film has previously been described within this analysis as something of each rig ht Hollywood production, this depth in helping to describe and elaborate upon human emotion is useful and relevant with regards to seeking to understand this film within the context of sociological and interpersonal development. This alternative definition of C is a welcome refreshment from the one-sided definition of intimacy is oftentimes presented to the viewer. Although it is true that neither physical nor emotional intimacy can be categorized as having a more powerful effect, seeking to exhibit both within a film is more effective means of presenting the level of closeness that would necessarily exist between characters that share such a bond. Similarly, as it is realized that there is tension between the two characters and a series of conflicts arise, it can be noted that the female character, played by Eva Mendes, begins to engage in what can be termed as a cost-benefit analysis of the relationship (Hitch 2005). Ultimately, as a result of the seeming deception that she has wi tnessed throughout the course of her relationship, she becomes highly self doubtful with regards to whether there remains any future between the two. However, as time goes on, it is clearly seen that a level of regret is exhibited on the part of both characters and they ultimately seek to reconcile these differences new the conclusion of the film.

Formal And Informal Communication
Formal And Informal Communication In this report I have tried to enlighten the different aspects of communication in order to communicate effectively as a manager and different types of communication barriers which will distort the message delivery process and three recommendations for managers how to improve their communication skills. Hope this will complete the subject. INTRODUCTION The process of communication falls under three categories which are verbal communication, non verbal communication and written communication. Communication must include both transfer and understanding. Communication cannot exist without a sender and a receiver. Poor communication is probably the most frequently cited source of interpersonal conflict. According to Stephen and Mary (2009, p.329), managers are concern with two types of communication, which are interpersonal communication and organisational communication. Interpersonal communication is communicating with two or more people. And the organisational communication is all the patterns, networks, and system of communication within an organisation, which are important to mangers (Stepehen Mary, 2009, p.331). Four major functions of communication are control, motivate, emotional expression and information. The hierarchies form in the organisations is a control mechanism of communication in the organisations. In this they have created different levels of jobs and the communication is communicated by their immediate supervisor or boss. Communication motivates the employ by giving a feedback of his work how well he have done and in which area he needs to improve. The communication which takes place within the work place with the colleagues is a mechanism by which the members show their frustration and feeling of satisfaction. Therefore communication provides an emotional expression of feelings. The information provided by communication helps to make a decision by the receiver after evaluating the information provided through the communication. ASPECTS OF COMMUNICATION process of human com.jpg Exhibit Process of Human communication Source: http://www.ehow.com/how-does_5431820_process-human-communication.html [Accessed 30 August 2012]. Exhibit 1 which explains the communication process is made up of seven parts. It is 1.Sender sends a message 2.encode its and send it through a 3.channel and the 4 receiver decodes and 5.receive message 6.sends a feedback to the sender this chain concludes when the sender 7.receives the feedback message. Sender and Receiver The sender is the individual who initiates the conversation. The sender must communicate the message in a way that the receiver will understand. To do this the sender must encode the message. The way a message is encoded depends on the way the sender and receiver typically communicate and the relationship between the two individuals. The process of encoding is simply taking the thoughts in your head and putting them into words. However the words you use will change depending on who you are talking to. When talking to a customer, your language will be softer and different than when talking to your staffs. If a message is not properly encoded, it is unlikely that the message will be understood (Stephen, 1998, p.313). The Channel The channel aspect of the human communication process is the method through which the communication takes place. When humans communicate with one another they must select a channel to do so. Common channels include face-to-face meetings, letters, email, memos, reports, and telephone conversation (Frances, 1995, p.282). The channel selected helps shape the communication that will take place (James Amy, n.d.). Different channels have different strength. Noise Noise is one of the negative aspects of human communication and is characterized as the interference that occurs when verbally communicating. Noise can be internal, such as the sender or receiver was getting distracted, or external such as others talking making it difficult to hear the sender. Verbal Communication Verbal communication is communication that is spoken. However verbal communication can be extremely complicated. Verbal communication includes the tone and pitch of a persons voice, the words she chooses, her rate of speech and the volume she speaks at (Burtness Hulbert, 1985, p.319). Changing one of these characteristics can drastically change the way her messages are received. For example, if you are angry and want the person you are talking with to know you are angry, you are likely to raise your voice and maybe even use choice words. Nonverbal Communication Nonverbal communication is another aspect of human communication that we often forget about. Nonverbal communication includes the way we gesture, our posture, what we wear, our facial expressions and even how we sit. Nonverbal communication can be either complimentary or contradictory. Complimentary nonverbal messages strengthen what we are saying with our words, such as frowning when you are telling someone you are sad. Contradictory nonverbal messages weaken what we are saying with our words, such as having a disgusted facial expression while saying that the food is yummy. Formal and Informal Communication Formal communication is vertical and follows the authority chain and is limited. Informal communication known as the grapevine is free to move in any direction. This communication can be take place from vertical to horizontal, upwards and downwards and also can skip the authority levels. The grapevine communication is very effective and fast. This passes the massage within few time periods. Through this method managers can identify issues that employ consider important. Communication Network There are different patterns of network of communication. The structure itself influences the speed and accuracy of the message and performance and motivation of the participants. Chain: This gives a flow of information to the end of the chain. Circle: Here each person can communicate on both sides of him. Star: This is more decentralise and allows a free flow of information among all group members. Wheel: Information flows from one person to all. Y-Pattern: Two persons are close to the centre of the network Com Network.jpg Exhibit Organisation Communication Network Source: http://www.kkhsou.in/main/EVidya2/Professional%20English/communication.html [Accessed 30 August 2012] FIVE TYPES OF COMMUNICATION BARRIERS Filtering This is manipulating the message in an easy way that the receiver can listen or omitting some part of the message which may cause trouble. Language This is one of the common barriers of the world. There are countries which do not use an international language like English or any other common language and they use to stick on their local language. But in a globalizing world there must be a common language which could be use to communicate all. Words mean differently to different people. Age, education and cultural background influence a language the person uses and definition he or she uses (Stepehen Mary, 2009, p.337). Physical Barrier Physical barriers are physical objects which obstructs the receiver to clearly receive the message. For example a wall or distance from the sender (Christopher, 2010). Ità ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¢s is easy to overcome this barrier and in modern work place the physical barriers are avoided. Information Overload Overload of information is also a common barrier. We human beings can cater up to certain amount of information and if the capacity limit is exceeded we may do misinterpret the things which are communicated. Cross Cultural Communication ok-gesture.jpg Exhibit The A-Ok gesture Source: http://hidden-avenue.blogspot.com/ [Accessed 30 August 2012]. As a cross cultural barrier in different parts of the world people interpret gestures and signs differently. As seen in exhibit 3 for some culture they have a meaning which can be communicated in the community and in other cultures ità ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¢s abusing one another (Stephen, 1998, p.332). These factors create communication problem. So we must be careful when we communicate in an unknown cultural environment. THREE WAYS HOW MANAGERS CAN IMMPROVE THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS Avoid Information Overload The managers should be trained how to prioritise their work. They should not burden themselves with work and they should spend excellence moment with their subordinates and should listen to their problems and feedback activity. Be a good delegator and have a workload balance for the day. Plane your day and make a task list. Try to achieve your listed tasks for the day. Give Constructive Feedback Always try to avoid giving negative feedback. The content of the feedback might be negative, but it should be delivered constructively. Constructive feedback will lead effective communication and build a good relation between the superior and the subordinate. To give a feedback ità ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¢s better to give face to face or if not reachable by phone (Kitty, 1998, p.4). These feedbacks are informal and try to give it regularly and timely as soon as possible. Listening Actively A manager must be a good listener. When someone talks we hear. But most of us donà ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¢t listen. Listening is an active search for meaning whereas hearing is the passive. Active listening is enhancing developing empathy and putting yourself into senders position. These types of scenarios occur to managers daily. So be empathetic and an active listener to improve your communication skills (Victoria Holly, 2005).

Things They Carried Essay: Disembodiment -- Things They Carried Essays
Disembodiment in The Things They Carriedà à à With some knowledge of war, one can begin to appreciate Tim O' Brien's The Things They Carried.à But when the work is viewed in its strict historical context, another layer ofà meaning rises to the surface.à Tim O' Brien is a veteran; as a result there are many things he takes for granted (or so we think) and does not tell us.à America's involvement in the Vietnam war resulted from internal domestic politics rather than from the national spirit.à American soldiers had to fight a war without a cause, i.e. they were disembodied from the war.à But O' Brien never tells us this explicitly.à When Viewed from a historical perspective, The Things They Carried contains several syntactic allusions to the idea of disembodiment from the war. à One of the more obvious allusions is "The Ghost Soldiers."à The very title seems to suggest disembodiment - as though something were present, yet nothing at all.à Whenever O' Brien is bleeding to death in the field, he says that he feels "hollow." Effects of Advertising
Effects of Advertising Presentation Ashley Maloney HUM/176 10/21/2012 Dr. Caicco Effects of Advertising Presentation Effects of advertising can be positive and negative for some businesses, it just depends on the type of business you are running, and the type of advertising you choose. I chose to reflect on the effects of advertising fast food. Fast food is common and almost everyone eats at a fast food restaurant weekly. A lot of people speculate that the fast food restaurants target young children for obesity.Fast food restaurants are always going to be around and they are going to continue to expand with their ways of advertising. Fast food restaurants are advertised many ways, including: Television, Internet, Billboards, Coupons, Mail, etc. The television is a popular way of advertising because a lot of people watch it. People watch TV daily, some all day every day. So fast food restaurants know that their products will be seen if they are on the television set. Internet always h as ads that pop-up when you are on there.Even if your not on a certain website that pertains to them, the pop-ups will still come about. Even though you have the option to either look at the pop-up or click out of it, it is still there. Even a glance at the pop-up will make you see their products. Billboards are a popular way to advertise because people drive daily. If you are on your way to work you will more than likely see a billboard that promotes new products by fast food restaurants. Coupons are sent whether you want them or not. I get them all the time.Restaurants send these coupons out because they promote a buy one get one free advertisement, which is unique to me because it is a way to pull people in. It is a way for people to go back time and time again. Who doesnââ¬â¢t like free food? Speculators believe that children are targets for obesity when it comes to fast food. Marketing for fast food restaurants is proven to be unhealthy for children. The L. A. Times reports: In 2009 preschoolers saw 56% more ads for Subway, 21% more ads for McDonaldââ¬â¢s and 9% more ads for Burger King, compared with 2007.Children age 6 to 11 saw even more: 59% more ads for Subway, 26% more for McDonaldââ¬â¢s and 10% more for Burger King. The report also found that African American kids and teens are exposed to at least 50% more fast food ads than their white counterparts. (Melnick, 2012 Time Inc). Eating fast food has become a routine for families nowadays because they have no time for making dinner so they stop at a restaurant and eat. When a parent eats late, they tend to make a quick stop because they are too tired or do not have the time for going home and making a dinner. It also makes it difficult because they have no time to spend with their children. Advertising is big today because it promotes the product that the business is trying to sell. They do not care about the health of children and teens as long as they are making money. Advertising draws more customers in and more customers bring in more revenue for the business. References Melnick, M. (2012 Time Inc). Time Healthland. Who We Are Essay - 2052 Words
What is position do Black American hold in society today? If Black Americans were to just disappear without a trace, would it effect America economically, politically, and socially? The answer is yes, but we would not have the power to survive on our own. The only power that we truly have is buying power in America. Black Americans are infamous for putting their money into things that are materialistic rather than things that will turn their money over. Jackie Robinson Broke Baseball s Color Barrier - 1197 Words
Jackie Robinson During the 1940 s, the African Americans were segregated from the Whites in America. White people in America had a lot more advantages or opportunities. Up until when Jackie Robinson potentially brought the two races together, many signs of hatred were shown on the African Americans. They had separate schools, restaurants, and transportation systems. Nobody ever thought that the two races would be integrated one day. Predictably, life at this time was not very easy for African Americans. Civil Rights activists, though, were determined to change the way African Americans were treated. In November of 1945, Jackie Robinson broke baseball s color barrier becoming the first African American to play Major League Baseball. Robinson made his first appearance playing for Brooklyn Dodgers. People were at first skeptical about letting an African American into the sport. Branch Rickey, the Dodgers general manager, ignored the skepticism and gave robinson the go ahead to join his team. Soon t hey realized that a new era in our country has begun. Jackie Robinson entered the league reluctant to know about the hate that he would get but left one of the greatest players in the sport for not only his talent but what he did for the country. This opened the sport and many other things for the African American race. The Affordable Care Act Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
ââ¬Å"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.â⬠Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act, hereafter referred to as the ACA, was signed into law. Even though the reformed healthcare system allowed more Americans to access to quality affordable health insurance, it still has many flaws. We focus on solving the problem that the current health care policies are based on a hierarchal system, where the higher one is placed in the socioeconomic status, the better quality and access to healthcare him or her will get. Unfortunately, the ACA completely excludes undocumented immigrants from the eligibility of the program, even though this population consists of 11 million, which is a huge chunk of the nationââ¬â¢s population. English Language Essay Example For Students
English Language Essay Blindness, as a literal term in the first connotation, is sightless; difficult to comprehend or see. (Webster 103). When one thinks of something blind, they think of a physical blindness of shuteyes and glasses. Yet, when one looks deeper into the definition of blindness, one may realize that blindness is not just a disease of the eye, it is a disease of the heart, the soul and the mind. Blindness makes one turn away from family, love and even sanity. Blindness is powerful. Blindness can kill, both physically and spiritually. In Evelyn Laus Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid, Evelyn Lau suffers during her life on the streets because she refuses to accept the reality that she cannot exist by herself, without the aid of others who truly love her. Her view of a free world actually confines her and makes her vulnerable to the world at large because she is blind to the truth. She is blind to love, blind to aid and, though somewhat solipsist, blind to even herself. Evelyn fails to see the love in the way her parents decide to raise her. She believes homelessness, where she can live by her own rules, at the age of fourteen, will solve her issues of confinement at home. In a fit of anger, she writes, Havent my parents ostracized me enough? (Lau 15). In this, Evelyn attributes the actions of her parents to the problems she faces while on the streets. Because she feels they raise her incorrectly, she forces herself into a life as a homeless, teenage, drug addict, prostitute, and yet still blames it on her parents. Homelessness is not an option of last resort for aà teenager that lives in a stable household: it is an all out choice. She believes that their actions are completely bizarre, though in truth, are quite common by other parents. Evelyn considers parents to be ruthless and blind to her needs, yet she fails to recognize that it is the only way they know how to raise a child. Her parents teach respect and discipline through tough love. She takes the actions of her parents and denotes negative connotations to all of them to justify her own opinion. Evelyn feels that when her parents confine her and refuse to let her leave the house on some occasions, it is a deliberate attack on her persona. When they refuse her to creatively write, something in which Evelyn is kept sane, she believes that they have absolutely no intention to understand what is important to her. One can agree that Evelyns parents ask very much of her, yet it is no reason to run away from home. The love Evelyns parents show for her is difficult to accept, but Evelyn is not only blind to it, she also refuses to truly search for it. Throughout Evelyns endeavours as a street kid, she, on many occasions, permits herself into and out of child services, hospitals, friends' homes and psychiatric wards, while still unable to see who truly wishes to aid her. She continuously catches herself in her own ideals of freedom and independence while she endlessly makes the wrong decisions. Child services is an association that takes in this helpless child on many occasions and tries continually to put her on the right path of life, yet she always decides to run from the only organizations that truly tries to help her. Because they set down rules for her to follow to keep clean from drugs and off the streets, she believes they try to harm her persona; they remind her of her parents the thing she ran away from. .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 , .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .postImageUrl , .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 , .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207:hover , .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207:visited , .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207:active { border:0!important; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207:active , .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207 .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uaf80d17ef90e3b3c97fdf541c8cc1207:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: What is Linguistics? EssayEvelyn blinds herself from the world that aids her and runs to her own free world: the houses and hotels of so-called friends. These friends entice her to live in the world that she craves, away from the rules and structure where she can be free to write and rebel. These friends are not there to aid her, though; they are there to make her an addict, a prostitute, a weak link of which they can take advantage. She is sightless to their true intentions because of her naivety. Because she is unable to see true aid in counselors, psychiatrists and doctors, she spirals herself deeper and deeper into addiction, prostitution and horrible decisions. Though Evelyns runs away to escape from the social boundaries and the reality of a life at home run by her parents a bid for the freedom of self she becomes blind to herself in which she loses self esteem, self respect, and self discipline. She loses sight of her culture, her values and her spirituality. Evelyn no longer has control of her life; drugs now control her life. She must prostitute herself to survive and keep her addiction; yet she refuses to be humble and return home where she can achieve a state of safety and sanity more easily than on the streets. She tries on her own to rid of her addiction but it is no use, Im trying very hard to cut down. Im dancing as fast as I can torn between the importance of my writing and the seduction of drugs. The colors of the pills are so pretty(Lau 197). Here, she shows that even though she realizes that she has a choice, she continues to take the wrong path because her blindness affects the order of her priorities. She continues on to say, I could become one of the top writers in Canada, or I could be a drug addict, or I could die. These are the choices.(Lau 197). Evelyn still realizes that she has an option; she still has the ability to go back and right the wrongs,à but the blinders that the street and supposed freedom have put upon Evelyns eyes inhibit her to make that conclusion. Evelyns blindness of love, aid and herself truly cause her to suffer throughout the novel. Without the foundation of family, Evelyn has no chance of survival. Human nature states that one cannot exist without the other; in this, solitary confinement is the most severe penalty one can receive. Evelyn experiences a mental state of solitude on the streets, with only her writings that keep her sane. She is fortunate to find such escape in something so intellectual, or else insanity is inevitable. Though Evelyn turns out to be a prize-winning Canadian author, it is evident that this dark spot on her childhood will remain with her forever, not as just a horrible period of her life, but as a learning curve. Evelyn grows every time she revisits her horrible street life, just as society should learn from its horrible mistakes. Works Cited Ask Grandpa: Solipsism. Says Who Music Censorship In The New Millenium Essays -
Says Who? Music Censorship In The New Millenium Says Who? Citizenship in America holds many rights. Among these rights are the right to vote, the right to bear arms, and the most widely treasured but largely manipulated, right to free speech. As a citizen of America the right to free speech comes along with many responsibilities, but for the small percentage that exercise their right of free speech to a large public forum, it comes with many stipulations. The more prominent figures under a barrage of criticism are those involved in the arts. In our history classic books have been burned, news stories have been edited, and music has been turned off. What's interesting about this group is that the latter is not covered by the first amendment. In this essay I will be exploring the accusations made based on the influence of music, the backlash of the artists, and hypothesize how the scapegoat accusations and censorship of music will affect the twenty first century. First I would like to address the idea of music censorship. When the majority of the population thinks of music censorship the first amendment comes to mind. Americans are mislead in this assumption. The first amendment states, ?Congress shall make no law representing an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and petition the Government for a redress of grievances.? From this one may assume that the censorship of music is prohibited based on the law of our constitution. However, when music is censored, our government does not do it, but instead by special interest groups. In the instances that court hearings are conducted to determine whether or not an artist or artists have the right to produce and mass market their work, the court hearings are rarely tried as a civil rights hearing. ?According to existing laws, art is constitutionally protected spe ech. But music is not censored on the basis of art; it is censored on the basis of obscenity.? (Nuzum 2) Special interest groups and corporations claiming to be protecting the interests of their consumers have enforced most of the censorship that has been placed on music in the United States. Organizations such as the Christian Collation, The American Family Association, and The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) have been leaders in bringing offensive music into the mainstream eye. Their attempts to shield minors from more distasteful music have been publicized and fueled all the way to the Supreme Court. Tipper Gore founded the Parents Music Resource Center in 1985. Gore, along with other board members were involved in the placement of warning labels on music. The labels read Parental Advisory-Explicit Lyrics and are placed on albums according to set guidelines. This instatement of the labels has been enforced, though there is still no evidence that the labels have deterred the youth from listening to the music. Instead there may be evidence that the labels have actually boosted sales. PMRC head, Barbara Wyatt, recognizes this truth. ?In an issue of the Roc, a magazine that opposes music censorship, Wyatt was quoted, Even if there is a label on [a recording], any chil d can buy it, and the forbidden fruit is often the most appealing fruit.? (Hull 18). Censorship done by corporations is evident in history. Decisions made such as the Ed Sullivan show taping Elvis from the waist up was were not court mandated, but instead agreed upon and enforced by the employees of the company. The Beatles who are arguably one of the most influential recording groups in popular culture were molded into a marketable commodity by their record label, Capitol Records. Their musical lyrics were controversial, but more offending than that was the original cover for their album, Yesterday and Today. The original cover had the men wearing ?white smocks covered with raw, bloody meat and surrounded by decapitated baby dolls.? (Nuzum 1) This cover was recalled and then replaced with the four men wearing suits and smiling by the record label. In recent history, stores such as Wal-Mart and K-Mart have taken stands against offensive music. Neither store will carry recordings that have

War and the Meaning of Home
War and the Meaning of Home Wendell Berry, an American author and farmer, was a devoted countryman as well as a person of place. Being the first son in a huge family, Berry realized that the attention and respect to the land you live in is important. He realized that love to land and native home is integral for many people, and he truly believed that his devotion to his roots could make him more humane. Wendell was greatly inspired by the land where he lived in and decided to stick to the old farming methods of using horses to plough instead of modern tractors.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on War and the Meaning of Home specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More At age thirty, he acquired a farm in his indigenous Henry County where he became a full time farmer and improved his teaching and writing (Kramer, A Farmers Gift, para. 1). In his works, Berry makes a wonderful attempt to compare a soldierââ¬â¢s attitude before and after war, analyze what aspects of war are able to change a soldierââ¬â¢s mind and principles, and explain why war has to be accepted as the merciless disperser only that negatively influence the current state of affairs. According to Wendell Berry, war plays a crucial role in the life of everybody involved. If a soldier leaves home for war, he has to consider whether or not he will survive, and how he will be welcomed upon his return. War has a significant characteristic to influence everything around and inside a person: his mind, his home, his relationships, and his existence. Berry has written approximately twenty-five poetry books, sixteen essays, and eleven novels along with a collection of short narratives. Berry devoted about fifty-five years of his life to the improvement of his publishing career, and as a result, he has become quite admired in the American publishing sphere. One of Berryââ¬â¢s more popular literary works is a short story called ââ¬Å"Making It Homeâ⬠, which is fr om a book called ââ¬Å"Fidelity: Five Storiesâ⬠. This particular story expresses many of the War related problems a soldier is faced with upon returning home. The essay that follows will clearly attempt to demonstrate how war and home are two things that cannot be separated from a soldierââ¬â¢s mind. Berry clearly explains himself by stating, ââ¬Å"War is the great scatterer, the merciless disperserâ⬠(Peters, Wendell Berry: Life and Work, 17). From this, we can conclude that war has the drastic effect of devastating the homes that were left behind by the soldiers just as much as it has agonizing and devastating effects in the battlefield. Berry introduces the main causality of war as the death of a country because truth usually perishes during the process of diplomacy; however, the country remains to suffer the devastating consequences of the war long after it has ended. The aftermath of war on both the opposing and the attacking side is usually what brings out this relationship between war and home for the soldier.Advertising Looking for research paper on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Did we win? If we lost, how it is possible to return home? How do we as a nation pick up the pieces? Wendell Berry explores ways in which war and its considerable aftereffects feature the countryside in its quest for transition for the desirable land that is usually found in urbanized areas. War has the drastic effect of devastating the homes that were left behind by the soldiers just as much as it has agonizing and devastating effects in the battlefield. Soldiers usually have an assignment of going into a battlefield with predestined effects in their lives. Within a short period of time, soldierââ¬â¢s thoughts demonstrate how dramatic the changes can be and make him believe that ââ¬Å"I am not a stranger, but I am changed. Now I know a mighty powerâ⬠(Berry, Making It Home, 97). A person is changed, and it is useless to think over possible reasons for such changes as it can be summed up with war only. War may change human life or even take it away, but Berry suggests considering the details of what may happen when a person comes back home after war, when almost all living principles are changed, and when the desire to continue living under after-war conditions disappears. After all the fighting and war is done, where does the soldier expect to go back? Moreover, this coming back is only applicable in the case of a draftee who has been lucky enough to survive these deracinating forces. In retrospect, what does this soldier hope to return to? Do they hope to return to a land that has been stripped bare by the great exodus that occurred during the war by the migration of people shifting to the opportunities that the war presented in the industrial cities? It is known that ââ¬Å"war devastates the home front as surely as it does the killing fiel dsâ⬠(Peters, Wendell Berry: Life and Work, 17). So then, in a soldierââ¬â¢s mind the following question surfaces: whether there is any purpose at all in re-uniting with people at home? Will they even be there and will it be the same as it was? The devastating and undesirable consequences of war and the impossibility to forecast what happens after the war and to be sure about personal understanding of the events is one more peculiar feature of war outcomes. World War II made many people chose to be urban dwellers instead of living in the countryside that had once had the potential of being lucrative. Many dwellers instead eclipsed the lush countryside that had once had the potential of being lucrative. Berry feels that ââ¬Å"Warâ⬠¦ in the outer darkness beyond the reach of love, where people do not know one another kill one another and there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, where nothing is allowed to be real enough to be spreadâ⬠(Peters, Wendell Berry: Life and Work, 19).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on War and the Meaning of Home specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This proved to be a constant issue Berry wrote about in his fictitious work. The Second World War was a representation of destruction, mechanization, and depopulation. Thus, many lost their loved ones in the war (Wendell, A Citizenââ¬â¢s Response to the National Security Strategy of the United States of America, 436). This therefore exemplifies the anxiety in a soldierââ¬â¢s mind about the fear of coming back to drastic changes, which seem to have no place for him/ her anymore. The cultural aspect of war makes it possible to nationalize a nation and develop another force that can retain or even change considerably the features which cannot belong to the existed requirements. The traditional neutrality of the American culture would be abandoned in the course of the two world wars. The school was appr oached as a repository for collective memories as a bodily expression of community culture (Peters, Wendell Berry: Life and Work, 22). Again, the effects of war become a reason to unify a nationââ¬â¢s interests and purpose giving a soldier a sense of purpose. On the flipside though, this creates an uncomfortable and unsettling feeling of obsoleteness upon the return home. A home is the place that remains to be a common ground where a good life can be achieved even after a war. In Making It Home, Berry demonstrates one of the happiest moments in the life of every soldier, the moment when he ââ¬Å"has his place to which he can returnâ⬠(Peters, Wendell Berry: Life and Work, 22). Art qualifies to be one of the lucky soldiers who survive the war. He has a place to which he can return a utopia or reality. After three years of operating as an expendable cog, Art finally makes it and is able to come back home. Art travels by way of bus towards home. On his way home, he cannot eve n realize that now he is one of those who know nothing about his surroundings. Before he reaches his place, he is only separated by several creeks that he once knew by name: ââ¬Å"It pleased Art to think that the government owed him nothing, and that he needed nothing from it, and he was on his own. Nonetheless, the government thought it owed him tribute. It wanted to praise him and the rest for their acts that it considered heroic as well as glorious. This is because the war was ending and their victory was glorious.â⬠(Berry, Making It Home, 87) With the help of this quote, Berry tries to explain how the government accepts the idea of victory and compares it to the thoughts and attitudes of the soldier. Though government is an evident participant in the war, its representatives never fight the battle on the front lines. They may support soldiers and promise them many things; however, when the war is over, a soldier returns home. He is going home, and nothing can distract him except the idea of what is waiting for him.Advertising Looking for research paper on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! He describes this so perfectly in Berryââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"The Morningââ¬â¢s News.â⬠In this work, Berry makes one more attempt to evaluate the impact of war and its aftereffects. He tries to compare death by its design and introduces the tragic nature of war using the innocence of the nature and of the child. ââ¬Å"I look at my son, whose eyes are like a young godââ¬â¢s,/ they are so open to the worldâ⬠(Berry, The Morningââ¬â¢s News, 88). Berry is sickened by the killing that is done to human beings and he explains further ââ¬Å"and I am sickened by the complicity in my raceâ⬠(Berry, The Morningââ¬â¢s News, 87). In addition, he argues the following: ââ¬Å"to kill or be killed in hot sav agery like a beast is understandable. It is forgivable and curable. But to kill, by design, deliberately, without wrath, that is the sullen labor that perfects Hell.â⬠(Berry, The Morningââ¬â¢s News, 87) This ideas disturbs him to think how cruel a human being can be and has a connection to the fact that a soldier and, in some cases, a prisoner of war convicted of heinous crimes are sentenced to capital punishment. Berry critically wonders when peace will settle in the world for both him and his family. He ends up finding solace in how wild things conduct their lives: ââ¬Å"When despair for the world grows in me/ and I wake in the night at the least sound/ in fear of what my life and my childrens lives may beâ⬠¦/ I come into the peace of wild thingsâ⬠¦/ I enjoy the light of the stars.â⬠(Berry, The Peace of Wild Things, 85) Berry feels some kind of freedom when he forgets the constant ââ¬Å"warâ⬠he has to face with his conscience about the difficulties t hat are found in life. Christians were certainly confused about the writings in the scripture, and Wendell Berry brought understanding of the scripture and a definite guidance that sought to show environmental ethics that were brought out in the scriptures. Berryââ¬â¢s works ââ¬Å"have revealed significant shifts in his religious thought and important intensifications of his commitment to religious foundations for an ethical life, his fiction invariably remains firmly secular with none of his main characters espousing strong religious beliefsâ⬠(Murphy, The Unforeseen Self in the Works of Wendell Berry para.1). The works of poetry that he has written best demonstrate what it actually means to inhabit a holy community where creation is forever taking place. His opinion about Christian ecology can be best obtained by interpretations of his poetry. The motivation that drives Wendell to write this poetry is to bring about emancipation to Christians from ââ¬Å"failures and erro rs of Christian practiceâ⬠. His purpose is to bring Christians to view divinity as something that exists in all features of the earthly population. People need to have something to believe in, and Berry finds Christianity as a powerful means to rely on. In an essay written by Berry, he brings out what the nature poems bring out. ââ¬Å"It seeks to give us a sense of our proper place in the scheme of things. Man, it keeps reminding us, is the center of the universe only in the sense that wherever he is, it seems to him that he is at the center of his own horizon; the truth is that he is only a part of a vast complex of life, on the totality and order of which he is blindly dependent. Since that totality and order have never yet come within the rational competence of our race the natural effect of such poetry is the religious one of humility and awe.â⬠(McKibben, Wendell Berry and the Cultivation of Life: A Readers Guide para. 12) This attitude helps to explain why a soldie r continues to serve their country zealously and protect his home wishing for the day when such senseless conflicts can resolved without resorting to such drastic measures. Wendell Berry clearly explains how war and home are directly linked in a soldierââ¬â¢s mind. His desire to evaluate the details of the event makes him more interesting and more intriguing. He makes a good attempt to focus on war times and the outcomes which are inalienable for people. According to him, war is a devastating event that ought to be avoided altogether. There are numerous reasons why wars begin, but the consequences it brings are far worse compared to the reasons why the war was fought in the first place. We must avoid these situations altogether. Such people like Berry show some possible ways to advocate peace in order to solve things and take measures to prevent the occurrence of wars. Berry, Wendell. The Hurt Man.
